Idea #44: Haikus for learning

Students joining University encounter numerous different formats of writing that they need to become familiar with, such as essays, reports and more. A fun and active way to introduce students to the complexities of academic writing, such as word limits, different types of writings and how to use examples, is by introducing haikus – a form of poetry. Dr Jessica Hancock, in her chapter in the ‘100 Ideas for Active Learning’ book, explains how she has applied that in her context in a MA course about Teaching and Learning in HE, and provides recommendations of how others can use a similar approach for their contexts.
